Editorial

Frenchman Marc Gomez won the prologue in Santiago de Compostela.

Angel Arroyo, of the Reynolds team, won in Madrid, but two days later, four riders tested positive for doping: Alberto Fernández Blanco, Vicente Belda, Pedro Muñoz, and especially Angel Arroyo. He tested positive for methylphenidate. He requested a second test, which also proved positive. The title went to Marino Lejarreta.

In 2025, Angel Arroyo still claimed that Marino Lejarreta had "stolen" this edition of the Vuelta from him. He stated in Diario de Burgos: "After the famous Navacerrada stage (...), I tested positive. I took another test on Saturday and was negative. But they stuck with the Friday test. The winner, Lejarreta, didn't take a single test." If so, that's unfortunate but Lejaretta's control would never have resulted in Arroyo's samples being negative!
